Jewelry on Shopify: variants, custom options, or products?

When names, engraving, birthstones, metal, ring size and chain length should be Shopify variants, custom options or products, stocked or made to order.

Most personalized jewelry is a design you already sell, made personal after the order: a name necklace cut to the customer’s name, a ring engraved inside the band, a family bracelet set with each child’s birthstone. Shopify’s variants handle what you stock, such as a pendant on three chain lengths. They cannot take the personalization: a name or an engraving is free text, a birthstone is chosen once per child, and the bench needs all of it on the order line. Jewelry is also sold two ways, fashion pieces stocked in plated or sterling finishes and fine pieces cast, set and sized after the order, and where each choice belongs in Shopify depends on which kind you sell.

In short: if you would count it on the shelf, it is a variant; if the bench makes it after the order, it is a custom option; if a shopper would search for the design on its own, it is a separate product. This guide applies that rule to personalization, metal, ring size, chain length and stones, with the pricing and conditional logic each needs. It draws on our research into how hundreds of e-commerce jewelry stores configure their custom options.

Start with how you stock and make jewelry

  • Stocked finished pieces. You buy or make ahead and hold stock: a sterling pendant on an 18-inch chain, a plated ring in sizes 5 to 9, earrings in gold and silver tone.
  • Made to order from a menu. The design is fixed, but the piece is cut, cast or assembled after the order, with the customer’s name, metal, size and stones.
  • One-off commissions. Engagement rings and remodels, where the customer chooses the stone, its size and the setting.

Shopify has three places to put a choice, and each matches one of these:

Where the choice livesUse it whenWhat Shopify gives you
Separate productsShoppers search for, compare and buy the designs separatelyOwn page, photos, price, description and place in search and collections
VariantsYou stock and count each versionOwn SKU, barcode, stock level, price, weight and image; the theme’s picker; collection filters by metal and size
Custom optionsThe choice is an instruction to the bench: a text to engrave, a stone to set, a metal to cast, a size to makeChoices saved on the order line; add-on prices; text, numbers, uploads; conditional logic

Products and variants are built into Shopify. Custom options are not: a name field, a birthstone choice or a priced engraving comes from a product options app such as OptionWise, or from custom theme code.

Which jewelry choices should be separate products

Make a design its own product. A solitaire, a halo and a three-stone ring are three products even if they share a band: shoppers search for them by style, compare them side by side, and each needs its own photographs. A necklace and its matching earrings are two products, with the earrings offered on the necklace page as an add-on product rather than a combined “set” with every metal and length baked in.

Do not split a design by metal. A pendant in yellow gold, white gold and rose gold is one product with a metal choice, whether that choice is a variant or a custom option. The exception is a design sold at two price levels, such as a plated and a solid-gold version: those are two products, because shoppers search for them differently and each has its own photos and care notes.

Metal, size and length: variants when stocked

Metal, ring size and chain length are the classic jewelry variants, and whether they should be depends on whether the piece exists before the order.

  • Stocked, they are variants. A plated necklace in gold tone and silver tone, a fashion ring in sizes 5 to 9, a chain cut ahead to 16, 18 and 20 inches: each is a finished piece with a stock count. Variants also power the metal and size filters on your collection pages (Shopify’s filter documentation).
  • Made after the order, they are custom options. A gold ring cast in the customer’s metal and size, or a chain cut from a spool, has no stock in any version.

The numbers show why. Ring sizes run from 4 to 12, and in quarter sizes that is thirty-three values; a made-to-order ring in thirty-three sizes, six metals and four stones is 792 variants for a ring that does not exist until the order arrives. A fourth choice, such as a stone setting, no longer fits: Shopify allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product. The engraving itself could never be a variant, because it is free text.

Custom options do not create SKUs. The piece keeps its SKU (or one per stocked variant), and the choices arrive on the order as line item properties: “Name: Amelia, Birthstone: July – Ruby”. That is the bench sheet, on the order page, the packing slip and the notification email (where options appear). Choices are per item, so two engraved rings in one order are two lines, each with its own text.

Custom options for personalized and made-to-order jewelry

Personalized text is the most common option in jewelry, offered by over a third of stores, and engraving by about a quarter. The detail on character limits, fonts and lines is in the engraving guide. For personalization:

  • Names, as an OptionWise text field with a minimum and maximum length. Where the price depends on the length of a name necklace, make the letter count the choice (“Up to 4 letters”, “5–6 letters (+$20)”) and reveal a name field with the matching limits for each. A text field counts every character, spaces and hyphens included, so say in the label how a name like Mary-Jo is counted.
  • Engraving, one text field per engraved line with a maximum length (about 10 to 15 characters inside a ring, four lines of about 30 on a medal), revealed by an “Add engraving” choice with a flat add-on price.
  • Initials, as a text field of one to three characters, or, for a single-letter charm, image swatches of the letters A to Z.
  • Font, as three to six image swatches of real engraving.
  • Handwriting, fingerprints and photos, as an OptionWise file upload, revealed by an engraving-type choice (“Text” or “Handwriting (+$65)”) and attached to the order line.
  • Birthstones, named by month and stone (“July – Ruby”), because customers choose by month and your setter picks by stone. Lists differ on some months, so say which stones you use for June and December. For several stones on one piece, ask for the number of stones, then show one birthstone choice per stone.
  • Zodiac signs, with the dates in the value (“Leo (Jul 23 – Aug 22)”) so customers who do not know their sign can still choose.

For pieces made after the order:

  • Metal, as swatches, with the upgrade priced once on the karat: 14k yellow, white and rose at the base price, each 18k value one flat step above. A heavier design needs a bigger step, so give it its own option set.
  • Ring size, required with no default, starting with “Send me a ring sizer” so an unsure customer can still order, and with both systems in each value (“US 7 / UK N½”) so an international customer chooses by the number they know.
  • Chain length and style: lengths cluster at 16, 18 and 20 inches; styles (cable, box, figaro, snake) are a fixed list alongside.
  • Stones for fine pieces: a stone type, then a size list for that type, each size named the way the setter reads it (“8x6mm (1.5 ct)” for moissanite; carat, color and clarity for diamonds) with its own add-on price.
  • Keepsake inclusions: a keepsake ring can list what goes into the piece (hair, ashes, breastmilk) as a checkbox list, with a special-instructions field.

In OptionWise, any option can be required and any single choice can carry a default, and add-to-cart and express checkout (Shop Pay, Buy it now) are held until required choices are made. Assign the option set to a tag or collection rather than product by product, so a new necklace has its options the moment it is published (assign to products).

Conditional logic for jewelry forms

An engagement ring or a family necklace can run past ten fields. Conditional logic shows a field only after the choice that makes it relevant:

  • Letter count reveals the name field with the matching length limits.
  • “Add engraving” reveals the engraving fields, so a plain piece has a short form.
  • Number of stones reveals one birthstone choice per stone: Birthstone 2 when the count is 2 or more, Birthstone 3 when it is 3 or more.
  • Stone type reveals that stone’s size list.
  • Engraving type reveals the upload only for handwriting.

In OptionWise, any buttons, dropdown, radio, checkbox or swatch choice can reveal other fields, on one value or any of several. Hidden fields are not validated and send nothing to the order. See conditional logic.

Pricing personalization and add-on products

Stocked metals and sizes carry their own variant prices. On the custom options, price what changes the work: a longer name, engraving, a second engraved side, handwriting engraving, extra stones, karat upgrades, stone type and size. Keep font, birthstone month, ring size and gold color within a karat free. In OptionWise, add-on prices are fixed amounts on a value, totaled live on the page and carried through the cart, checkout and order. Price stone counts on the count (+$90, +$180, +$270).

A stocked extra is an add-on product: a gift box, a ring sizer, the matching earrings. OptionWise’s linked-product option adds the real product to the cart with its own price and stock, grouped with the piece. For gift messages and wrapping, see gift wrap and gift messages.

Worked examples

Each example is the product page as the customer sees it, labeled: what is a Shopify variant, what is a custom option, and what is an add-on product.

A name necklace with a gift box

The plated chains are stocked in two finishes and two lengths, so finish and length are variants. The name is cut after the order, so the letter count is a priced choice that reveals a name field with the matching limits, and a birthstone is an optional extra. The gift box is a stocked product, so it is an add-on product. This is the page the starter option set below builds.

A birthstone family bracelet, made to order

Nothing is stocked: each bracelet is assembled after the order, so there are no variants and even the metal and size are custom options. The stone count is priced by step, and each extra birthstone choice appears only when the count reaches it.

A starter option set for a name necklace

Install OptionWise, keep finish and chain length as Shopify variants if you stock the chains, then build this set: create an option set, add each option below, and assign it to a tag such as name-necklace. Prices are examples in dollars; use your own amounts and currency.

The minimum on each name field keeps a four-letter name out of the 5–6 price, and the name and birthstone are required only when they are shown. For a made-to-order ring, replace these with a Metal choice (18k one flat step above 14k), a Ring size list starting with “Send me a ring sizer”, and an “Add engraving” checkbox revealing the engraving text and font.

Common mistakes

  • A product per metal. “Disc pendant – Gold”, “Disc pendant – Silver”: a collection of duplicates. One product, one metal choice.
  • Made-to-order sizes and metals as variants. Hundreds of phantom SKUs for rings that do not exist yet. Keep them as custom options.
  • Stocked sizes as custom options. No stock count goes down, so you oversell the size 7s. If you hold stock per size, size is a variant.
  • A ring size with a default. Everyone who does not look gets a size 7. Leave ring size required with no default.
  • Birthstones named by month only. The setter has to look up which stone you use for June. Name both.
  • Name length priced by the character. Price the letter count as a choice instead, with limits on each name field.
  • Option sets attached product by product. The new necklace goes live without its name field. Assign by tag or collection.

Options should load with the page

On a jewelry page the customer chooses the chain, the name and the stone as one decision, and on a fine piece the price moves by hundreds with each. Most options apps add their fields after the page has loaded, so the name and stone choices appear a moment later and push the add-to-cart button down. OptionWise’s custom options load as part of the product page, next to the variant picker, so they appear with the price and photos and nothing moves (learn more).

Frequently asked questions

Should ring size be a Shopify variant or a custom option?

A variant if you hold finished rings in each size and count them; a custom option if the ring is cast, sized or resized after the order. Fashion rings stocked in a handful of sizes belong on Shopify's variant picker. Fine rings made to order in half and quarter sizes are custom options, added with an app such as OptionWise, and can start with a 'Send me a ring sizer' value for customers who do not know their size.

Should metal (14k gold, 18k gold, sterling silver) be a variant on Shopify?

A variant when each metal is a finished piece you stock, which is usual for plated and sterling fashion jewelry. A custom option when the piece is cast after the order, which is usual for fine gold and platinum. With OptionWise, a metal choice made to order can carry a fixed add-on price on the upgraded values, such as 18k over 14k, carried through the cart, checkout and order.

How do I let customers choose birthstones for a family necklace on Shopify?

Ask for the number of stones first, then show one birthstone choice per stone. In OptionWise the count is a fixed-list option such as buttons, and conditional logic reveals Birthstone 2 only when the count is 2 or more, Birthstone 3 when it is 3 or more, and so on. Name each value by month and stone ('January – Garnet'), and each stone arrives on the order as its own line item property.

How do I sell an engagement ring with a choice of stone size and metal on Shopify?

Keep the ring design as its own product and take the stone, stone size, metal and ring size as custom options, because the ring is made after the order. In OptionWise, a stone-type choice such as Moissanite or Lab diamond can reveal the size list for that stone, each size carrying its own fixed add-on price, so the price on the page updates as the customer chooses.

How do I charge for a name necklace by the number of letters on Shopify?

Offer the letter count as a fixed list with a price on each value, such as 'Up to 4 letters', '5–6 letters (+$20)' and '7–8 letters (+$40)', and reveal a text field with the matching length limits for each. OptionWise add-on prices are fixed amounts on a value, so the letter count carries the price and the name field enforces it.

How do I offer a gift box with a necklace on Shopify?

If the gift box is a stocked product, offer it on the necklace page as an add-on product. OptionWise's linked-product option adds the real gift box to the cart with its own price and stock, grouped with the necklace. If the box is included free, say so in the description instead of adding a choice.

OptionWise for jewelry stores

OptionWise is a Shopify product options app. For a jewelry store, it puts names, engraving, birthstones, metals, ring sizes and stone choices next to the theme’s variant picker, and saves every choice to the order line for the bench.

OptionWise is free for life for stores that install today. It adds a block to your theme, with no code changes.
